DEBATE: SHOULD ANAESTHETIC BE USED IN CIRCUMCISION?

Is anaesthetic a good idea in circumcision? Or are the complications it can cause just too great? Finnish Jews Moshe and Miriam Levi have been fined by the Helsinki District Court after British rabbi Yossi Simon did not use an anaesthetic when circumcising their son Aviv.
Do you think it should be used? And if so, what should be done?

SHOULD ANAESTHETIC BE USED IN CIRCUMCISION?
We need to be beyond reproach
It takes no time and no risk just to dab some cream which numbs the vital area!
I don't understand why mohels can't do this. We must preserve circumcision, and its under attack by so many people.
We can't allow it to be made illegal so if we were to use anaesthetic and use doctors then we are beyond any criticism.
I wouldn't go as far as a general anaesthetic, much too dangerous!
If Judaism - or any other faith, for that matter - shouldn't have to change in order to be accepted by those of other faiths or atheists, should we also reinstate metzitzah b'peh? What would the rest of the world think about that? A large part of the reason why it no longer (or at least, very rarely) takes place is that it's just too controversial. If we stopped that, why not unanaesthetised britot?
Since when should religion change its rules in order to be accepted by other religions, or even atheists? Circumcision is not illegal for males. It is part of the religious and cultural spectrum of being Jewish. Why should such a practice be watered down in order to cater for people in other religions? Why should Jews have to live their practices in such and such a way that pleases other people? The answer is they do not have to and therefore they should not.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/std/std-bris.shtml -some mohelim use a glass tube to suck blood away from the laceration; I`m reminded of pipettes. There`s no law or restriction as such stopping people from practicing metzitzah b'peh, because it`s a religious custom.
If most Jewish people prefer getting their babies` parts anesthetized for the procedure ; great for them However people who choose not to use anesthetics should not be legally liable because it is a religious custom.

SHOULD ANAESTHETIC BE USED IN CIRCUMCISION?
Causing pain to a child unnecessarily is morally wrong
The act of circumcision does not need to come under scrutiny here if we lay the facts down like this.
Circumcision has many benefits of hygiene and preventing future problems. It is also part of the Jewish culture.
The act of circumcision itself is not morally wrong. Causing present pain to avoid future harm; that is acceptable.
However, when there are so many new and wonderful ways to stop children feeling pain, it is barbaric to continue to complete circumcisions without anesthetic. This is putting a child through unnecessary pain and could even be classed as torture.
SHOULD ANAESTHETIC BE USED IN CIRCUMCISION?
It's a complete waste of time
Just because the baby does not remember the pain, it does not mean the baby does not feel it. It is precisely because babies do not remember their pain at such a young age that we could never quantify the pain that the baby feels. Attempting to quantify such pain is idiotic. Any pain remembered or not, should not be inflicted upon a young child and therefore, pain relief measures should be taken.
mohelim rarely use anaesthetic when performing circumcisions.
If we use the pain relief cream, firstly it can inhibit the cut, and secondly it can cause inflammation. Then you have to wait for the swelling to go down and the eight days have passed.
A pain relief injection is stupid, the injection cause more pain to the baby than the procedure itself.
An eight-day old baby just doesn't feel pain in the same way, and name me a person you know who feels traumatised by their bris!
